With innovation embedded in its DNA, Tatweer Misr has been recognized for developing sustainable and smart communities since its inception in 2014. The company is a pioneer in introducing innovative concepts of integrated living, while also fostering sustainable development across the country.
The mission at Tatweer Misr is to create a future that is not only resilient but also people centric. The company strategy for effective implementation is based on two main approaches: the Build Asset Lifecycle approach and the Creating a Common Data approach.
An asset life cycle is the series of stages involved in the management of an asset. It starts with the planning stages when the need for an asset is identified and continues through its useful life and eventual disposal. In this context, Tatweer Misr’s Built Asset Lifecycle approach is a framework that covers the whole lifecycle of its built assets, from the initial idea to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance phases.
For its part, the Creating a Common Data Environment approach entails developing tools that facilitate communication across all functions of the company, by storing, managing, and sharing documents, acting as a single source of information for all internal and external teams. More broadly, a common data environment (CDE) is a cloud-based space where information from construction projects is stored and accessible to project participants.
These approaches consider every detail, from the infrastructure and hardware to the different software and technologies that contribute to creating quality of life for Tatweer Misr homeowners. Specifically, the company’s integrated solutions lead to a 50% efficiency in energy and water consumption and a 40% reduction in operational and maintenance costs. They also actively contribute to the preservation of the environment.
Uniting Forces for a Sustainable Future
Over the years, Tatweer Misr has worked on developing a multilayered partnership mechanism to contribute to its vision of developing an innovative network solution where sustainable and smart city services meet the Internet of Things (IoT).
At the forefront of Tatweer Misr’s collaborations is a partnership with Schneider Electric which began in 2019. The partnership is considered a case study in the Middle East and Africa, as the two entities decided to push beyond their boundaries to integrate multiple technological innovations spanning hardware, infrastructure, and smart software into carefully designed developments. As a result of this collaborative approach, Tatweer Misr became the first real estate developer in the region to introduce Schneider Electric’s latest technologies into its fully-fledged communities.
This, among other notable partnerships with leading global service providers in multiple sectors, enables Tatweer Misr to deliver sustainable and smart technological solutions across its projects to help build fully connected smart communities.
ESG Excellence Unveiled
In recent years, Tatweer Misr has made significant progress when it comes to partnerships and awareness relating to corporate sustainability by cofounding and participating in several ESG acceleration initiatives, such as Chapter Zero Egypt. The company has also launched a dedicated sustainability unit that is responsible for applying corporate sustainability practices across its portfolio, guided by ESG principles. By integrating ESG into its core values, Tatweer Misr aims to create sustainable value for all its stakeholders.
Tatweer Misr is also committed to being transparent when it comes reporting and reducing its carbon emissions, as it recognizes that achieving net zero is a shared responsibility that extends beyond compliance with climate-related policies. Back in 2021, the company developed a detailed carbon accounting study, encompassing their headquarters and their sales offices, as well as their flagship project, IL Monte Galala.
Building upon the insights garnered, Tatweer Misr has developed and is actively implementing, a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction plan. The plan is rooted in the 2021 carbon footprint and Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which call for an annual reduction rate of 4.2% to reach a 42% reduction by 2030, with the goal of achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2050.
Moreover, Tatweer Misr has earned three ISO certificates related to quality management, occupational health and safety, and environmental management, for its facility management company, ProperT.
After successfully moving to its new headquarters in Arkan Plaza, Sheikh Zayed City, Tatweer Misr will be able to transparently report a drastic reduction in its carbon emissions by the end of 2024, exceeding its previously communicated targets.
This progress and commitment to reducing GHG emissions are testaments to the company's dedication to protecting the planet and building a sustainable future for its communities.
Sustainable Horizons: A Dynamic Presence at COP27 and COP28
In a noteworthy milestone, Tatweer Misr demonstrated its unwavering commitment to sustainability by showcasing its sustainable practices at COP27. Throughout the conference, Tatweer Misr actively participated in numerous discussions and closed sessions, with a primary focus on critical issues such as combating climate change and achieving zero-emissions targets. The company's engagement went beyond mere participation, as it showcased its project IL Monte Galala as a compelling case study for sustainability.
Building on the momentum created during COP27, Tatweer Misr actively participated in COP28, held in Dubai, UAE. The company worked on forging new partnerships and initiatives aimed at advancing its sustainability agenda. From the outset, the company solidified its dedication to climate action and sustainability across the African continent by becoming an active member of the Africa Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC), which is considered the first coalition of its kind in Africa, including leaders of nearly 60 private sector companies committed to climate action. Tatweer Misr was invited to join by Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Private Sector Affairs and CEO of the United Nations Global Compact.
In another milestone for the company, Tatweer Misr signed a strategic agreement with the UN Global Compact Network Egypt (UNGCNE) and Climate Consultancy to launch the Built Environment Sustainability Transformation (BEST) initiative. Tatweer Misr’s Dr. Ahmed Shalaby serves as a member of the advisory board for the initiative, which aims to establish clear foundations for the transformation of real estate, construction, and building sector companies towards sustainability.
The company has also signed another agreement with UNGCNE to develop the Tatweer Misr Innovation Competition – an annual competition to allow Egyptian youth to present innovative solutions and ideas that deal with the various challenges facing the real estate sector.
As per the agreement, UNGCNE will organize an exchange program for the competition winners to visit Germany and Denmark. During the visits, winners will attend lectures at leading universities and will have the opportunity to meet with CEOs of major global companies, with the aim of exchanging experiences and showcasing their projects.
